Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to bring you Ian Michael Crumm, our resident men's fashion expert, here to share style pointers and tips for tackling the latest trends in menswear. Straighten those neckerchiefs—Ian is on the go!
Working in the fashion world, I love to get inspired by other people making a name for themselves in this industry. Sabir M. Peele, founder and editor of Men's Style Pro, is one of those Philadelphians who pairs tailored suits with leather monk straps he helped design.
After first meeting him at a book signing with The Sartorialist last year at the Barnes Foundation, I immediately started following his blog. Wanting to know where all of his style comes from, I asked Sabir a few questions. Beware: You might want a custom suit after reading his responses!
Who's your style icon?
I've always appreciated the style of Sammy Davis Jr. because of his ability to dance in well-tailored suits. My modern style icons are Michael Bastian and Lap Elkann. Bastian's ability to create tailored sportswear is just baffling. Lapo brings a whimsical flair to menswear with the Italian tailored edge that can't be duplicated, but inspires the hell out of me.
Anything in particular inspire your outfits?
Most often I am inspired by colors and patterns. Most guys are really afraid of either or both altogether. My role with Men's Style Pro is to inspire others to think slightly outside of the box and put a spin on their wardrobe—one that's practical and reflective of a tailored style.
What are your favorite stores to shop in Philly?
When I'm perusing the streets of Philly, I almost always stop by my custom spot at 16th and Walnut, Enzo Custom Clothiers. Enzo is where I get all of my custom suits and shirts locally. I am big fan of Jack Wills and Urban Outfitters in Rittenhouse as well. If I'm going thrifty, I'll hit up Greene Street Consignment in Manayunk or Cultured Couture Vintage off of Girard Avenue. Not to forget skincare, I'll hit up Kiehl's in Liberty Place or the King of Prussia Mall.
What's the must-have item for men this season?
Definitely look into restocking your polo shirt collection. With collaborations like Michael Bastian x Uniqlo on the shelves, the polo has been revamped. As an extra item, definitely add a pair of colored loafers to your footwear arsenal (especially in dusty colors).
What's the latest addition to your wardrobe?
I just had a brown pinstriped linen custom suit come in from Indochino and a bunch of swim trunks. I'm currently waiting on a custom three piece plaid suit from J.Hilburn and some of the exclusive dark red leather Men's Style Pro x Mantorii kicks as well.
What projects are you working on?
This year I signed on with Nivea Men as a part of their digital influencer network, which allows me showcase new products, cover events, and bring everyone the scoop on what's going with Nivea Men. A few months ago, I collaborated with online custom shoe maker Mantorii to design an exclusive custom shoe. Mid-June, I'll be heading to Florence, Italy to cover the largest menswear trade show in the world, Pitti Uomo.
Outside of your blog, what do you like to do?
I like exploring great places to eat and drink in Philly (especially Twenty Manning); getting in a good work out four days a week; and kicking it with my wife (who's also the photographer for Men's Style Pro).
